[So, Mart is new to all this Mayfield shenannigans and having to track down and kill some guy leaves a bad taste in his mouth.

But, if the guy's a dick and he can get his powers back for it, and death isn't even permanent then hell, why not?]

A. Phone

So, all we gotta do is take out somebody who won't even be dead for long? Not that big a deal to me. 'Cause the sooner I get my powers back, the better. But shit like this happened before I hear around? So, what happened last time?

B. Action.

[Mart is sitting on the front porch of his house, giant sandwich in hand/mouth, population control package and letter to his side. He'll look menacingly at anyone who approaches.]

[This phonecall is relevant to LeChuck's interests. He knows exactly one person who never stays dead for long, and that person's name is LeChuck.]

Excuse me, young man! What did you mean when you said they don't stay dead for long? Are we supposed to be killing... [his voice drops to a whisper.] ...zombies?

Hell, I dunno. I'm pretty new here.

All I know is that according to the weird scientist guy's manual, if someone in Mayfield is killed they just pop up the next day.

Really now. If that's true, that certainly put things in a much different light!

[Well, now he knows not to blow his cover right before he kills anyone, at least.]

Yeah. Gotta love there being no consequences to our actions.

[Mart hears the waivering in the young girl's voice. His target is supposed to be a tough guy but he forgot that guys and girls his age or younger have been caught into this...]

Well, uh, I mean I figure it's not such a huge deal since they'll just come back.

But I wouldn't kill somebody who was just an innocent kid or nothin'.

I'm not an asshole.

Oh, oh/i>, I s-see.

[Even if he doesn't sound like a completely decent person, Mio doesn't think he deserves to die. Nobody deserves to die, actually.]

Try not to k-kill anyone please?

Sorry.

But if I want my powers back and shit, I gotta take my guy out.

... and if I don't I think they'll try and do something to my mom.

Um, I guess...? Take...care?

[OHGOD she can't do it. She can't kill anyone anywhere for no reason whatsoever. Mio is just going to hang and go hide somewhere now, thanks.]

I'm going to guess you're new to this place, then. You're correct; death is temporary here. However... if you think the town is going to allow you to keep everything you get back this way, you're sorely mistaken.

[His tone is a mix of mild irritation and amusement.]

This little mess marks the third time my powers have been stripped down to being "human" again. Probably to give other members a chance.

Yeah, read a pamphlet the pink flamingo guy was giving out.

And I don't know about you, but the sooner I get my powers back, the sooner I can kick soem serious ass.

Pink flamingo guy... I do believe I haven't met him yet.

Ah, but it isn't that simple, either. You will begin to understand, I think, as this mess goes on. [He chuckles, though.] Regaining powers is a slow process, and it seems random as to what you get... though, if you're willing to give something up, you can retrieve regains from the Post Office. ... Not right now, I imagine.

Yeah, I heard about that too.

I'd rather keep my brain and limbs, thanks alot.

[His amusement only redoubles, at that.]

One would think most would think that way... but I suppose, if you aren't using your brain, you've little need for it, hm? You, at least, sound confident... that should do you well in this experiment.

I would be careful, however, to keep in mind those who wouldn't hesitate to end you before you so much as see them.

From: [identity profile] jaws5sonofjaws.livejournal.com
Hey!

I use my brain all the time!

Just usually the instinctual part.

What the fuck're you talking about with an experiment?

Date: 2011-06-02 02:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] doctor-creep.livejournal.com
... I didn't insinuate that you didn't. [Though the fact that he's so defensive about it is telling.]

Ah, you can't tell? Most of these people consider themselves generally "good" people, yes? So what has this town done?

Take away everything that the older denizens have worked to get back, then send them a letter illustrating that they're to kill others, for some vague prize... anyone new to the town will bite without much hesitation, right? "We have your family", or your friends, or something else you care dearly for... but do they? How can you be sure?

And will they give us what we want most? Even if it's something like wishing to "go home"? Yet... humans have hope. They must, as they are mortal, and hope is all that holds them together in the worst of times. So they cling to that, and maybe even hold to their morals, refusing to kill.

But the seeds of doubt are there. What if they do have someone you love? What if they can offer consequences? That is the great experiment. How long does it take before a human's mind breaks, and they give in to their own bestial nature?

... Granted, this is all hypothetical, but it's the way I plan to observe this from! [Cheerful as ever, you can practically hear the smile on the other end of the receiver.]

Because you are such a sick fuck.

Crazy? I suppose humans do call mystics crazy, sometimes...

However, I am a doctor like any other, really. I treat people as any human doctor would... although my fees generally weed out those who would come to me for simple things.

[A beat.] ... Well. My fees and my eccentricities. I'm somewhat of an... artist of fear, you see.

And it's a pleasure to meet you, Mart Vineyard. [Ever pleasant, it seems...]

Yeah, I ain't exactly human either.

I'm a demi-god, and an ass-kicking one at that.

And I have no idea about what you're talking about. Dr. of fear? Is this like one of those movies where you're really a serial killer?

Not sure it's so cool meeting you.

A demi-god? How... intriguing. Yes, quite intriguing... rude, though.

[... Mart, did you really just give him an opening to explain this? Really? Welp, I hope you like long, drawn-out explanations.]

Of course not. If you're going to pay me, then of course I'll cure any ailment within my power. However... [This pause is your last chance to hang up, man.]

As a doctor, I am in a unique position to handle human - and sometimes other creatures' - emotions. One can say that the moment a person comes to a doctor for treatment, they're already plagued with distrust in their own health, and the fear of disease. So, I would do everything I could - using anachronistic places or objects, for example - to ensure that my patients were at the height of unease and wariness.

And then, at the point when their fear and hope are trying to level out, they would speak to my skeletal friend in the waiting room, and set to motion the rest of the carefully cultivated pieces, like the strings of a harp being plucked in perfect discord and dissonance.

And then, when their hearts are racing and they're almost ready to leave, I'll call them into the examination room. When they come in, I let them know that everything's ready for the operation, and that they should lie on the bed.

[His excitement has been building the longer he talks, and it's clear that this is the highest point of it.] Of course, most people will scream and run from such a situation. And why? Because their fear has overcome their doubt in themselves and their health, of course! And all this, everything I spent my time working on back in Koorong, gives me the greatest sense of joy and elation, you see!

[... You still there? You should be able to get a word in edgewise now, Mart...]

You're just another creepy doctor to me.

A point of interest, of course. I haven't met any before, after all.

[He sighs, then, heavily.] It's a little too bad Fuse isn't here. I believe you two would get along quite well.

Your creepy Igor assistant?

... Igor assistant? [Congratulations, you have confused him... wait, wait, he thinks he remembers some movie from forever ago, right.]

Ah. Not at all. Fuse is an IRPO - that's Inter-Regional Police Organization - officer. King Sei would be much closer to an "Igor assistant," I believe. [Nope. He doesn't miss a beat after that.]

You think so? Any world is strange when it's significantly different than the one you're from, after all.

Perhaps your world is the strange one, but that's all speculation, hm? [At least he's still amused, by the tone of his voice.]

Date: 2011-06-03 05:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jaws5sonofjaws.livejournal.com
Pfft.

Mine ain't strange. It'd got super heroes, giant monsters, and aliens just like any other place would.

Date: 2011-06-03 06:03 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] doctor-creep.livejournal.com
... You're right, that sounds rather normal. [No, he's not kidding!]

But mine is, hm? [All his amusement, right now] I suppose to people from other worlds, having a set of Regions suspended in the sea-like Chaos could be considered so... but that is how my home has always been.
